Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short.

A generous effort from Keith Jarrett – backed up by his incredible, multi-instrumentalist co-horts Dewey Redman (tenor sax, clarinet, bells, percussion and more), Charlie Haden (bass, congas, clappers, steel drum) and Paul Motion (drums and percussion). The pieces cover a pretty far range of styles – from the meandering and mellow Jarrett piano that begins "Birth", to the wonderful.

Thanks to its strong start, Shades is one of this unit's most rewarding recordings.

"Shades Of Jazz" Has A Memorable Melody And Logical (If Unpredictable) Improvisations By Jarrett And Tenor-Saxophonist Dewey Redman. The Momentum Slows Down A Bit With The Gospellish "Southern Smiles" And "Rose Petals" But Picks Up Again With The Final Number, The Rather Intense "Diatribe," An Excellent Vehicle For This Classic Group.

Just though the past couple years, I've come to realize it's impossiple to listen to everything. So it's a good thing my tastes can overlook a lot of genres. I grew up listening to a steady diet of jazz music, then came the 60's and pop music, which quickly turned to power pop. Still loving jazz the obvious next step was jazz-fusion, from there progressive music was right around the corner.
